Meeting Minutes – January 7, 2009

NC Department of Public Instruction – Raleigh, NC

 

Members Present:   Carolyn Williams, David Corsetti, Sheree Covey, Felicia Eybl, Jack Hoke, Sheri Strickland, Cindee Rigsbee, Dianne Jackson, Meg Turner, Allison Ormond

 

Members Absent: Brian Freeman, Tammy Jordan, Mary Mack-Bryant, Delores Parker, Donna Simmons

 

Staff Present:  Carolyn McKinney, Connie Barbour

 

Carolyn Williams, Commission Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM and welcomed all in attendance.  After introductions, the Commission reviewed the proposed agenda for the meeting.  Jack Hoke moved that the agenda be accepted as amended and Sheree Covey seconded the motion.  Motion carried. 

 

Representatives from Moore County Schools presented their lateral entry proposal for review by the Commission.  After discussion, a motion was made by Dave Corsetti to approve the alternative lateral entry proposal with the strong recommendation that the program evaluation piece begin with the new evaluation instrument and all incoming candidates will be counseled on lateral entry licensure options and outcomes.  The motion was seconded by Allison Ormond.  Motion carried.

 

The Commission reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting of the Commission.  Jack Hoke moved that the minutes be approved as read.  Sheree Covey seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

 

Carolyn McKinney on a few budget items and some proposed funding transfers.  Keri Randolph moved that the report be approved as read.  Jack Hoke seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

 

Carolyn McKinney presented the 2008 Annual report of the Commission that was submitted to the Education Oversight Committee of the General Assembly.

 

Eric Hirsch, Special Projects Director of the New Teacher Center at the University of California at Santa Cruz updated the Commission on the Teacher Working Conditions Survey Report.

 

The next Commission Meeting is scheduled for May 1 and 2 in Raleigh.  Details to follow (due to budget restrictions, the meeting was changed to a conference call scheduled for April 30 at 4:30 PM).

 

Overall, the meeting was evaluated as excellent.  The Commission members liked attending the NC State Board of Education Committee Meetings. 

 

Keri Randolph made a motion to adjourn.  Dianne Jackson seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  The Commission adjourned the meeting at 6:00 PM.
